Green Community Art Project
The goal of this proposed art class is to expose and inspire families from all levels of artistic ability and knowledge to an art which is not typically taught in the mainstream school system. The main purpose and theme of this class is to emphasise self empowerment with the use of recycled materials, keeping an eco-friendly, open minded approach to everything.
I plan to collect as much recycled materials as possible to be used in all art pieces. By doing this I hope to encourage the children to be more eco-minded as well as keep the material fee low. I believe that by using uncommon materials for all projects the children will gain new appreciation for creativity.
I have put together a series of seven projects, carefully arranged to build “skills” and self confidence by the end of the final project. The initial class will be an introduction to examples of multiple, alternative styles of art, including examples of local artists. The students will be given a chance to create a piece of artwork of anything they wish with any of the collected recycled materials available. The purpose is to be able to evaluate and acknowledge each student’s artistic confidence. The second week will be a lesson in impermanence, with which I hope to inspire the students to let go of any preconceived ideas of what art can be. We will be creating chalk masterpieces with the final objective to watch it wash away once finished. Week three will be an evening of papermaking, which will be used on later dates. Week four will be the construction of textured collages. The major emphasis in this project is to foreshadow the skills needed for the final project. Week five we will be creating a “found art” sculpture from unique objects that the students have brought from home. Again the main purpose of this project is of importance for the final project. Weeks six and seven will be used for a culminating project. We will be designing and constructing an outdoor art instalment. With permission I would like to have the final product displayed to give the children a sense of pride in their creation.
I believe that by completing this series of classes the families will gain a heightened sense of self confidence as well as an insight into an alternative art form. I also feel that it is important to promote an eco-friendly outlook in children.
Week One Anything Goes
Child lead art project using available recycled supplies, with the purpose of evaluating child’s individual skills as well as confidence level within a creative environment. From this I will be able to encourage each child individually with emphasis on letting go of their preconceived ideas of what they have been taught to believe as typical art. I plan to show the students examples of all genres of art, being aware of not including offensive images. I would like to inspire the students by exposing them to alternate pieces of art. I will also introduce music to draw inspiration from.
Week Two Outdoor Chalk Art
The major emphasis if this project will be on the beauty of impermanence. I would like to teach the students to be able to pour their heart into something just to let it go. They will be creating a masterpiece of chalk. Once finished we will all pour buckets of water on our projects simultaneously to watch our work disappear into something completely different. This, I hope will be a liberating moment.
Week Three Homemade Paper
I will bring in pre mixed paper pulp. The students will be instructed to add food colouring, sparkles, and pieces of other materials. They will screen and press the pulp to make their own paper. For their take home project they will make paper with flower seeds mixed in, which can be planted in their home gardens or given as gifts. The finished paper will be used in the next week’s collage.
Week Four Collage
This week’s project will be a textured collage on card board. I will provide homemade examples of multiple styles of construction. The completion of this project will foreshadow the skills needed to be successful in later classes culminating to the final project of a group outdoor art instalment. Also, I will explain the next week’s project, a Found Art Sculpture, instructing the students to brainstorm ideas of how to construct and attach materials without hot glue or nails. They will be able to use only the articles available.
Week Five Found Art Sculpture
I will be inspiring the children with examples of famous “found art” pieces from the Dadaist Movement the early 1900’s, as well as creating examples of my own, keeping in mind the students’ age abilities. We will be using home found objects as well as available collected supplies. The purpose of this class is empower the students to see art as an “anything goes” self expression and meaning. Positive attitude will be constantly re-enforced leaving no room for self doubt and insecurity.
Week Six Initial Design and Construction of Outdoor Art Instalment
We will be collectively deciding on a base for our project, keeping in mind that we will be only using recycled materials. Once this is established we will begin pieces of art with a common theme which will be attached. The students may continue work on their individual pieces at home until the next week.
Week Seven Completion of Outdoor Art Instalment
This class will be longer to allow enough time to complete our project and celebrate our accomplishment.
